Resume writing services from editors who check every line against your record

Most resumes fail the same way: they list what you were responsible for and hide what you got done. Our resume writing services start with a conversation about the second part. We're an independent publishing house in Lake City, Colorado, and the people who work on your resume edit for a living.

Why a resume is harder to write than it looks

Every manuscript we read has the same problem in its first chapter. Resumes have it in the first bullet. The author is too close to the material, so duties crowd out results, and the reader gets a list of what the job was instead of what the person did in it.

You're the worst-placed person to edit your own career. You know too much, so a line like "managed vendor relationships" feels complete to you. To a stranger it says nothing. A resume is also read in a skim, which means order and structure decide what gets seen before a single sentence gets judged. And sometimes the first reader isn't a person at all.

The faults an editor sees most often are easy to list:

  • Task lists where results should be
  • Vague verbs, repeated down the page
  • Three versions of the same job title
  • Dates that don't quite add up
  • A summary paragraph that could belong to anyone

None of these is a character flaw. They're what happens when a document grows by accretion over fifteen years and nobody edits it.

What our resume writing services include

Everything below is work we run through our own process. Nothing on this list is a template pulled from a library.

The resume itself

We write a resume for one target role and level, built from an interview and from the material you already have. We mine your accomplishments; we don't invent them. The structure is chosen for your situation: a steady climb, a career change, a return to work after a gap. Wording gets tightened, verbs get varied, and jargon is either explained or cut. The layout is plain and readable, and the finished file is proofread before it reaches you.

Refreshing a resume you already have

If your resume is mostly sound and needs an editor's hand, we can refresh it instead of starting over. We read a sample before quoting, and we'll tell you if what you have needs a rewrite rather than the lighter pass you asked for. That's better to hear before paying than after.

Related documents

Cover letters, LinkedIn profile text and CVs are available on request and quoted separately, on the same fixed-fee basis. The resume is the service with a published starting price. Executive-level documents are quoted the same way. If what you need is a short professional bio or an about-me paragraph rather than a dated record of your work, that belongs with our professional bio writing, which is a different document with a different job.

03

The editorial standard behind your resume

This is the part other resume shops don't talk about, because most of them don't have an editorial desk. We do. A resume goes through the same habits we apply to a manuscript.

We work from your material

That means old resumes, job postings, performance reviews, certifications, anything with a date or a figure on it. MIT's career office gives the same basic advice we start from: record accomplishments, not just responsibilities, and don't let experience descriptions read like job descriptions.

Every claim is checked against your record

Titles, dates, employers, degrees and figures get traced back to something you gave us. If we can't trace a line, we flag it. You either confirm it or it's cut. We never add a number you didn't give us.

The test is a busy reader

Can a hiring manager see what you did in one pass? Formatting for software comes second, and we keep it plain.

Your document gets a style sheet

It's the same tool an editor keeps for a book: date format, tense, how job titles are capitalized, one spelling of each employer. We apply the same discipline in copyediting, and a skimming reader notices small inconsistencies first.

The final file is proofread against the approved draft before delivery

It's the same last pass as in our proofreading: dates, titles and spellings reconciled, nothing left from an earlier version.

We're an independent house in the San Juans, and this work sits outside the book trade. We say so because it's true. What carries over is the craft: clear sentences, claims checked, nothing left unreadable.

How we handle a figure you're unsure about

Say you remember that you "cut costs by about a fifth." We ask what the baseline was and where the record is. If you can't support it, the line says what you did and drops the number. A resume you can't defend in an interview does you harm.

04

How we write your resume, step by step

Step 01
Quote and sample

You send your current resume, if you have one, and tell us the kind of role you're after. We read it before quoting, then send one fixed fee in writing. The scope is agreed before work starts, and the NDA is signed first.

Step 02
Interview and intake

A short questionnaire comes first, then a conversation: the roles you want, what you're proudest of, what you left off. The writer takes down accomplishments, scope, team size and tools, in your words.

Step 03
Strategy and draft

The writer reads two or three postings for your target role and picks the vocabulary the field uses, using only words you can truthfully claim from your own record. Then comes the structure, then a full draft. You read it with our questions marked in the margin.

Step 04
Revision, check and delivery

Your notes go in. We check facts against your material, proofread the file and send you the final version. Payment is half on booking and half on delivery. We don't ask for a full fee up front.

05

Resumes, applicant tracking systems and plain formatting

Many employers run applicants through an applicant tracking system, and the worry about it sells a lot of resume services. We'd rather stick to what a university career office says. MIT's guide to ATS-friendly formatting puts it simply: "boring is better."

Here's what MIT says, and how it shapes our work:

  • Images, text boxes, tables and fancy graphics may be distorted, ignored or erased by a system, so we leave them out.
  • Use common, legible fonts, at least 10 point. Small, colorful or stylized fonts can drop content in conversion.
  • Employers may scan for keywords, so the language of the role should appear where it's true. MIT also warns against stuffing a resume, and says everything you list must be something you can account for.
  • Save a plain text copy and look for missing text or text in the wrong order. We run that check on your file as part of the proofread.

What we don't say is just as important. Nobody can promise how a particular employer's system will treat a document, and we don't promise a resume will "beat" or "pass" any system. We build a plain file, with keywords drawn only from your target postings and only where your record supports them.

What a resume writing service costs here

A resume starts at $320, the published price on our pricing page. That's a starting price, not a flat rate. You get one fixed fee, quoted in writing after we've read your current resume, and it doesn't change unless the job does. There are no packages and no hourly billing. Payment is half on booking and half on delivery.

What moves the price depends on a few honest things:

  • How much existing material you have to work from
  • How senior the role is, and how many roles the document has to cover
  • Whether you need a rewrite or a lighter refresh
  • Whether related documents are added to the job

We can't give you a number before we've seen what you have, and any figure we guessed at would be a guess. Send the resume and the role, and the quote that comes back is the one you'll pay.

07

Who this is for

  • Mid-career professionals whose resume has grown by accretion
  • Career changers who need a document that explains the move rather than hiding it
  • People returning to work after a gap
  • Senior professionals whose achievements need counting honestly. If you also need company-facing copy, our corporate writing services cover that side
  • First-time applicants putting together their first real record

It's not for anyone who wants invented credentials or inflated figures. We turn that work down and explain why.

08

What a resume writer can't do for you

We can't promise interviews, an offer, a salary, or how any employer's software will handle the file. The market, the posting and the recruiter decide those things, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling something other than writing.

What's yours to bring: real accomplishments, honest figures, references, a phone you'll answer, the choice of where to apply, and the interview itself. A good resume gets you read. You do the rest.

People ask whether they could just use AI. It's a fair question. Harvard's career office says generative AI can be useful in the editing process, for example to brainstorm revisions to bullet points, but that it shouldn't be the primary author, because its output will likely be very generic. A person who interviews you finds the specifics a prompt can't know.

Send us your current resume and the role you want. We'll read it and quote a fixed fee. If you'd like to see what clients say about working with us, here are their words, though those clients are mostly authors.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked

How much should a resume writer cost?

Our resume starts at $320, as published on our pricing page. It's a starting price, quoted as one fixed fee after we've read your current resume. What moves it is how senior the role is, how much material exists, and whether you need a rewrite or a refresh.

Is it worth paying for a resume writing service?

It depends on what's holding you back. If the problem is wording, structure and not knowing which achievements to lead with, a writer helps. If the problem is the fit of the roles you're applying for, a resume won't fix that. We can't promise interviews or offers.

Can employers tell if your resume was written by AI?

We can't speak for what any employer detects. What we can say is that a person writes yours, from an interview. Harvard's career office warns that AI output tends to be generic and shouldn't be the primary author. Specific, true detail is what reads as human.

What is the 7 second rule in a resume?

It's the idea that a reader skims before reading, so what sits at the top and the first words of each bullet carry the weight. We don't treat the number as fact. We write and edit with the skim in mind: strongest result first, one idea a line.

Will my resume get past applicant tracking systems?

No one can promise how a given employer's system behaves. Plain layouts, common fonts and copyable text lower the risk, according to MIT's career office. We build to that and check the file as plain text. We don't promise any outcome.

Do you write cover letters and LinkedIn profiles too?

Yes, on request, quoted separately as a fixed fee. The resume is the service with a published starting price, at $320. Profile and bio copy beyond a resume goes to our bio writing team, since that's a different document.

What do I need to send you to get started?

Your current resume, if you have one. Two or three postings for the role you want. A rough list of roles with dates. Any numbers you can back up, such as team size, budget, volumes or awards. If you have performance reviews or letters, send those too. We tell you what's missing before drafting.

Where are you based, and how do I reach you?

Our office is at 951 N State Highway 149, Lake City, Colorado 81235. You can call (336) 565-6915 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Mountain Time, or write to info@westernreflectionspublishing.com. Tell us where you are when you request a quote, and we'll explain how we'd work together.
