Our prices, published in full

Most publishing companies put an order button where the number should be. We would rather you could work out what your book costs before you speak to anyone, so every rate we charge is on this page. Fixed fees agreed in writing, no packages to buy your way up, and the copyright and the production files stay yours on every one of them.

Before the rates

There are two ways to publish with us, and only one of them has a price

Send the manuscript once and our editorial board reads it. Which of these you are quoted depends on what they say, and you are told either way.

If we acquire it

You pay nothing

The house carries the editing, the cover, the layout, the ISBN, the print run and the distribution, because we are betting on the book. You are paid a royalty on sales and the book joins the Western Reflections collection. This is what we are for, and it is why every submission is read by a person.

If you are publishing it yourself

You buy only the stages you need

Everything below is available on its own. Plenty of authors buy one developmental edit and nothing else. Nobody is required to take a package, and we will say plainly when a stage you have asked for is not the stage your manuscript needs.

Editing

Editing rates

Priced by the word, so a short book costs less than a long one and you can see why. The middle column works each rate out on an 80,000 word novel, the length our guides use.

ServicePriceWorks out atWhat you get
Manuscript assessment $0.020 a word $1,600 A full read and a written editorial report on structure, market and what to fix first. No marks on the manuscript.
Developmental edit $0.034 a word $2,720 Structure, pacing, argument and character, as an editorial letter plus notes in the margin.
Line edit $0.027 a word $2,160 Sentence by sentence, for rhythm, clarity and voice. Tracked changes you accept or reject.
Copy edit $0.023 a word $1,840 Grammar, consistency, fact checking against your own material, and a style sheet you keep.
Proofread $0.016 a word $1,280 The last pass on typeset pages, for typos, bad breaks and anything the earlier passes moved.

Minimum fee $450 a pass. We read a sample before quoting and will say if your manuscript needs an earlier stage than the one you asked for, which is often the cheaper answer.

Ghostwriting and book writing

Ghostwriting and book writing rates

Quoted between $0.20 and $0.32 a word, or as a flat project fee, which most authors prefer. Where a book lands in that band depends on research, how many interviews it takes, and the deadline.

ServicePriceWorks out atWhat you get
Short book or long-form from $6,000 20,000 to 35,000 words A single argument at book length, a company history, or a long essay.
Memoir or family history from $12,000 50,000 to 70,000 words Built from interviews, letters and photographs, written in your voice.
Business or authority book from $14,000 40,000 to 60,000 words Your method set down in order, with the research and the examples checked.
Novel or narrative non-fiction from $18,000 70,000 to 90,000 words Plot or structure agreed first, then drafted chapter by chapter with you reading as it goes.
Rewrite of an existing draft $0.12 a word For a finished manuscript that needs the writing lifted rather than the book written.

Paid in stages against delivered chapters, never all in advance. Your name is on the cover, the copyright is yours, and we sign a non-disclosure agreement before you send anything.

Marketing

Marketing rates

Deliberately modest, because the listing sells the book before any promotion does. We would rather fix the cover and the description than sell you an advertising budget.

ServicePriceWorks out atWhat you get
Listing and metadata $350 one book Categories, all seven keyword slots, and a description written to the retailer's limits.
Launch plan $750 90 day calendar What happens in the four months around publication, dated, with who does each part.
Advance reader team $900 Recruiting and briefing early readers, and the follow up that turns them into honest reviews.
Press release and list $650 Written, and sent to a named regional and trade list rather than a scattergun.
Advertising management $600 a month plus ad spend Amazon and Meta campaigns run small first, reported monthly in plain numbers.

We do not sell five figure launch packages. If someone quotes you one, ask what the money buys week by week and who reports on it.

On every line above

What is true of every quote we send

These are not upgrades and they are not negotiable in the other direction.

A fixed fee, in writing

You get a number before the work starts, not an hourly rate that grows. If the brief changes we requote rather than invoice the difference.

The copyright stays yours

On every service on this page. We take no share of it and no licence beyond doing the work you asked for.

Every production file

Layered cover art, typeset files, the style sheet, the manuscript. You can take them to another supplier tomorrow.

No royalty share

We do not take a percentage of your sales in exchange for doing the work. The fee is the fee.

No package you have to buy

Buy the developmental edit and nothing else if that is what the book needs. We will say so if it is.

A person on the other end

One editor or project manager by name, who answers within a business day.

How we get to a number

Four steps, and none of them cost anything

A quote takes one working day for a service and two for a book we are being asked to write. Nothing is chargeable until you say yes in writing.

You send the manuscript, or a description of the work if it is not written yet. An editor reads a real sample of it, not just the word count. We send one fixed fee, the stages it covers, and a date. If a cheaper stage would serve the book better, the quote says so.
Working out the cost of a book project
Questions about cost

The things authors ask before they ask for a quote

How much does it cost to publish a book with Western Reflections?
There are two routes and they cost very different amounts. If our editorial board acquires your book we pay for the editing, design, printing and distribution ourselves and you pay nothing. If you are publishing independently and buying our services, most books come to between $2,500 and $6,000 for editing, cover, layout and files, which matches the range our own costing guide gives for an independently published book produced properly.
Do you take a share of my royalties for services work?
No. When you buy services from us the fee on this page is the whole cost and your sales are entirely your own. A royalty share only exists on books the house acquires and publishes at its own expense, and that arrangement is set out in a contract before anything is signed.
Are these prices fixed or an estimate?
Fixed. We read a sample of your manuscript or take a brief, then send one number in writing. It does not move unless you change what you are asking for, and then we requote rather than add to the invoice.
What decides where my ghostwriting quote lands?
Length first, then how much research and interviewing it takes, then the deadline. A memoir built from conversations costs less than a business book that needs its claims checked against sources. Industry rates run from about ten cents to a dollar a word; ours sit between twenty and thirty-two cents.
Do I have to buy a package?
No, and we would rather you did not. Packages make you pay for stages your book does not need. The most common first purchase here is a single developmental edit, and for a good number of authors that plus a proofread is the whole bill.
My book is much shorter or longer than 80,000 words. What then?
The editing rates are per word, so the price scales with your actual word count. The 80,000 word column is only there so the rates can be compared. Below about 20,000 words the minimum fee of $450 a pass applies.
When do I pay?
Editing, design and production are half on booking and half on delivery. Ghostwriting is paid in stages against delivered chapters, so you are never paying for work you have not seen. We do not ask for a full project fee up front.
Do you work with authors outside Colorado?
Yes. We are a Colorado house and much of what we publish is regional, but the services on this page are bought by authors across the United States and the work is done by email, telephone and video.

Send it once and find out which route you are on

Our readers will tell you whether the house wants to publish your book at its own expense, and quote the services route either way. Both answers arrive in writing.
