Book Cover Design Services for Authors Who Plan to Be Read

A cover has about two seconds, and most of them happen at thumbnail size

Most readers meet your book as a small square in a list of other small squares, and only see the full-size cover once they've decided to look. At that size, a clever illustration and thin, decorative lettering turn to mush, and the title is what's left. If it can't be read at the size of a postage stamp, the cover has already lost.

A cover also tells the reader what kind of book this is, before a word of the description is read. Type weight, palette and image style are a shorthand readers already know. A thriller dressed like a memoir gets passed over by the people who'd have loved it and picked up by people who'll be let down. The same goes for a business book that looks like a self-help paperback.

Then there's the part nobody sees until it goes wrong: the cover is a production file. A printer will crop it, reject it or print it with a white sliver down one edge if the wrap, bleed and spine are off. Design and file preparation are one job.

A good cover helps the right reader recognize the book. That's the whole claim.

What our book cover design services include

The fee on our price list buys concepts, one chosen route, revisions to approval and the layered source files, for the print cover and the ebook cover together. You aren't handed a single take-it-or-leave-it design. You see concepts, pick the route that feels like your book, and we refine that one until you approve it. Every production file is yours to take to another supplier.

The work itself is the title treatment, the author name, any series line, the placement of the back-cover copy, and the spine. Before we start, we read your brief or a sample of the book. If the brief points to a different treatment than the one you asked for, we say so, then do what you decide.

Typography first, image second

The order of importance on a cover is title, then author name, then everything else. We set the type hierarchy before we choose the picture, because a legible title beats a beautiful image that nobody can read. A subtitle earns its space only if it survives being small.

Genre signals we design to

Romance, thrillers, memoir, business, children's: each has conventions, and we design to sit among them without copying any one cover. Memoir and narrative non-fiction often carry a restrained, type-led look. Thrillers lean on high contrast and heavy lettering. A business book wants an obvious promise and plenty of air. A children's book wants warmth and a clear focal point.

Book cover designers for hire: who works on your cover

When you hire book cover designers, you're really hiring a working arrangement: someone to design, someone to hold the brief, someone who knows the book. At our house a writer, an editor and a project manager stay with your book from the first conversation to the final file, so the person briefing the cover has read the manuscript. If you want to weigh up freelancers and studios first, our guide to how to compare book cover designers is the place for that. This page is the service, and that post is the comparison.

The print cover is a wrap, and the ebook cover is a different file

This is the part most cover pages skip, and the part that makes or breaks a printed book. Everything below comes from Amazon KDP's own help pages, which are worth reading in full before you finalize any cover. Your printer may differ, so check its template.

Paperback: front, spine, back and bleed

A paperback cover is one flat file that wraps the whole book: back cover, spine and front cover as a single image, supplied as one PDF, per KDP's paperback cover requirements. Four numbers decide whether it works.

  • Bleed. Art that runs to the edge needs 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) added to the top, bottom and outside edges, so trimming doesn't leave a white sliver.
  • Spine width. For a black-and-white book, KDP gives white paper as page count x 0.002252 inch and cream paper as page count x 0.0025 inch. Different paper, different spine, so the wrap is finished only once the page count is final. Try our free spine width calculator.
  • Spine text. KDP words its limit two ways, "more than 79 pages" and "at least 79 pages", so treat 80 pages as the safe minimum. A thin book gets a blank spine.
  • Images and text. Place images at 300 DPI or better, and keep text at least 0.125 inch inside the trim line.

Our free cover template generator gives you the layout to plan against.

Hardcover and dust jacket

A hardcover cover file wraps around the case board. KDP's hardcover cover guidelines have the image extend 0.51 inch past the front cover edge, and they keep a flexible hinge area beside the spine where text and the barcode must not sit. A jacket is its own set of panels with flaps. The printing side is covered on our hardcover book printing page.

Barcode and ISBN placement

The ISBN and its barcode belong on the back cover, and the numbers on the cover must match the book details entered at setup. KDP lets you supply your own barcode, at 2 by 1.2 inches and 300 DPI. If you don't, it places one in a white box in the lower right of the back cover, so anything important left there gets covered. We buy ISBNs at cost in your name: $125, or $295 for ten. Not sure which you need? Here's how to get an ISBN.

The ebook cover is a separate file

An ebook cover is a single front image built for screens, with no spine, no bleed and no barcode. The retailer sets its own sizing rules, which you can find in the retailer's ebook cover criteria, and we build to whatever they currently say. Our fee covers the print wrap and the ebook cover together.

05

A cover that reads as the right kind of book

Before anything is drawn, we ask which three books yours should sit beside on a virtual shelf. Then we design a cover that belongs in that company without borrowing from any of them. For a series, we plan the spine and series line so book two is recognizable from book one.

Before approving a draft, shrink it to roughly the size of a search result and look again. Can you read the title? Do you still know the genre? If not, the problem is the design, not the screen. Bold typography, photographic, minimalist and classic looks all pass that test easily. Our guide to winning cover concepts goes deeper on how to design a book cover that holds attention.

Fiction, non-fiction and children's books

Fiction covers sell a mood, so image and lettering carry the work. Non-fiction covers sell a promise, so the title and subtitle must say what the reader gets. Children's books need a clear focal point and type a parent can read aloud at a glance.

How a cover job runs

Step 01
Quote

Tell us the book, its genre, its trim size, the page count if you know it, and the books it should sit beside. We read a sample before quoting, and the price comes back to you in writing.

Step 02
Booking

Per our pricing page, "Editing, design and production are half on booking and half on delivery." We do not ask for a full project fee up front.

Step 03
Concepts

You see more than one route and choose one.

Step 04
Revisions

We refine the chosen route until you approve it.

Step 05
Final files

The print wrap, sized to your page count and paper, the ebook cover, and the layered source files.

Step 06
Handoff

If we're also doing your interior, the files go straight to interior book formatting, so the cover and the pages share fonts and tone.

We give no number of days here, because timing depends on the brief and our schedule, and the quote states it.

07

What a book cover design costs

Cover design starts at $850, and that covers print and ebook. It includes concepts, one chosen route, revisions to approval and the layered source files. A cover with original art starts at $1,800, which includes the artist's fee and the licence.

Both are starting prices, not flat rates. The fixed fee comes after we've read a sample or taken a brief, and if the brief changes, we requote instead of adding to the invoice. What moves the price is how much custom art the cover needs, how many formats it has to fit (a hardcover jacket on top of a paperback, say), and whether it belongs to a series. There's no package to buy. You can order the cover alone.

A typical independent book, with editing, cover, layout and files, runs $2,500 to $6,000. The full list is on our price list, and our post on what a book cover costs explains the market in more detail.

Design or illustration: where one stops and the other starts

Cover design is type, layout and composition, with photography or art placed inside a system. Original painted or drawn art, hand lettering and character work is commissioned illustration, a different job with a different fee. That's the $1,800 line, with the artist's fee and the licence included. If rights beyond the cover matter to you, such as merchandise or film, ask in the quote and we'll tell you what the licence covers. For that kind of work, see our original cover illustration page. If you'd rather start with the typography and a layout, you're in the right place.

Why authors bring their covers to a publisher

A publisher knows what happens to a cover after it leaves the designer's screen: the printer's file check, the retailer listing, the proof. The same house can edit the book, typeset it and prepare print files, so nothing is rebuilt halfway through. If a brief is better served by illustration, or the book needs an earlier stage first, we'll say so rather than take the money. And if the editorial board acquires your book, the house pays for the cover; you can submit your manuscript with no reading fee. For the wider route from manuscript to shelf, see our book publishing services.

Who this is for

  • First-time authors with a finished or nearly finished manuscript
  • Authors republishing a book that needs a new cover
  • Authors with a series who need one consistent look
  • Small publishers and businesses putting out a book
  • Memoirists and non-fiction authors who want a type-led cover

We design to your book, so a shelf of premade templates isn't what we offer.

11

Questions authors ask before they order a cover

I already have an image or an idea

Good, bring it. If the image came from somewhere, tell us where, because its licence has to cover use on a book cover. We'll talk through the source when we quote.

Can I use AI artwork?

Raise it in your request and we'll talk it through. Whatever made the first image, the finished cover has to be original, properly licensed and printable.

What if I don't like the concepts?

Say so. If the brief was wrong, we go back to the brief instead of patching a design that never fit.

Can I change the page count later?

You can, but the wrap changes with page count and paper, so the cover needs a re-fit, which may be quoted separately.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked

How much does it cost to hire someone to design a book cover?

Ours starts at $850 for a print and ebook cover, and at $1,800 when the cover uses original art. The fixed fee follows once we've read a sample or taken a brief. Market prices vary widely, and our post on what a book cover costs lays out the range.

How much do artists normally charge for book covers?

An illustrator's fee differs from a designer's, because original art is a commission with a licence attached. Our cover with original art starts at $1,800, with the artist's fee and the licence included. Details are on our book illustration services page.

Can ChatGPT design a book cover?

AI tools can produce images, but a cover is more than an image. It needs a printable wrap with correct bleed and spine, type that reads at thumbnail size, a clear zone for the barcode and a licence you can rely on. We design the file the printer needs.

Where can I get a book cover designed?

You can use a freelancer, a cover studio, a premade shop or a publisher. Freelancers and studios are flexible, premades are fast and cheap, and a publisher ties the cover to the rest of the book. For a side-by-side look, see our guide to book cover designers, or ask us for a quote.

Who typically designs book covers?

In a publishing house, a book designer or art director works with the editor and production manager. Independent authors usually hire freelancers or studios. Whoever it is needs to know type, composition, genre conventions and the printer's specifications, because a cover is a file as well as a picture.

What kind of book cover sells the best?

No cover guarantees sales. The ones that work fit their genre and stay readable at thumbnail size, which makes them easier for the right readers to recognize. We design toward that and promise nothing beyond it.

How long does a cover take, and what files do I get?

Timing depends on the brief and our schedule, and your quote states it. You receive the print wrap and the ebook cover, along with the layered source files, and the copyright stays yours. We build the wrap once your page count is final.

Do you design hardcover and dust jacket covers?

Yes. Tell us in your request which formats you need, so the quote covers them. The spine and jacket are measured to the paper and board, so that part is finished with the printer. See our hardcover book printing page for the printing side.
