About this book

Speck: The Life and Times of Spencer Penrose is a biography of the Colorado Springs businessman Spencer Penrose, published by Western Reflections in 2008 and written by Robert C. Olson. Our own record carries no publisher's description, so what follows comes from the publisher's blurb as reproduced on Goodreads and from reference sources.

The blurb says Penrose lived seventy-four years and went from a rich and shiftless son of the privileged class to a self-made prince of industry, society and philanthropy. It credits him with millions made in real estate and mining during the boom days of Cripple Creek, and with a leading role in Utah's Bingham copper mine. It also credits him with creating The Broadmoor resort on the side of Cheyenne Mountain south of Colorado Springs.

The blurb describes Olson as an author and artist, and promises detailed glimpses into the lives of Penrose's many prominent associates. Wikipedia's entry on Penrose gives dates of 1865 to 1939, and notes the Pikes Peak road finished in 1916, the Broadmoor in 1918, and the El Pomar Foundation, founded with his wife Julie in 1937.
