Book Publishing Events: Where Authors Meet Readers, Editors and Each Other

Book publishing events are where a manuscript turns into a conversation: with readers at a festival table, with a librarian who might shelve your book, with editors and other authors who have already made the mistakes you're about to avoid. We're an independent publisher in Lake City, Colorado, publishing since 1996, and this page is our honest guide to which events repay an author's time, plus a record of what we've hosted ourselves.

01

Our appearances, posted when they're confirmed

When we confirm a signing, festival table or workshop, it goes on this page with the date, the venue and a way to book. We don't list anything until it's real.

02

Events the house has hosted or attends

Our back catalogue is regional history, biography, memoir, and Colorado and Western writing, so the signings that matter most to us are the ones where readers of those books turn up: libraries, bookstores and local gatherings in the Mountain West.

The one event we have on record is an archived signing from 12 July 2012, "The Giving Back Gang," held at Maria's. It sits below as a past event rather than an upcoming date. Confirmed appearances will appear in the same format.

How authors use book publishing events

Before you pick an event, pick a reason. Most events serve one or two of these goals well and the others badly.

Sell in person

Signings, festival tables and bookstore days put the book in a reader's hand. Count the people who join your list as well as the copies sold.

Learn the business

Craft and publishing conferences run sessions on distribution, rights and metadata. Go with questions written down.

Meet buyers and rights people

Trade fairs exist for this. They're built for publishers, agents and rights buyers, so they suit a publisher with something to sell far more than a first-time author.

Find collaborators

Editors, designers, narrators, librarians and other authors all show up. One good introduction can save you a season of cold emails.

Build local standing

Libraries, independent bookstores and state book awards give a book a hometown. For a first title, that's often the best return on a day off work.

Our guides on how to market a book and the wider Author Resources hub cover what to do around the events.

04

Which book publishing events are worth an author's time

Events fall into four kinds, and the kind matters more than the name on the banner. Here's who each suits, what it costs, and our verdict.

Trade fairs

The London Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair gather publishers, agents and rights buyers. London's own site mentions an Author HQ and seminars, but most people on the floor are there to trade rights. Costs run highest of any kind: a ticket, international travel and lodging. Verdict: worth visiting to see how the industry works, or when a publisher is exhibiting your book. Otherwise spend the money elsewhere.

Author and self-publishing conferences

Events such as Author Nation and the Alliance of Independent Authors' advice center suit independent authors best: workshops, vendors and peers in one place. Costs are a registration fee, travel and lodging. Verdict: the most useful kind for a first or second book, as long as you leave with three things to do rather than thirty.

Readers' festivals and book fairs

The Tucson Festival of Books and the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books put authors in front of readers. Many choose presenting authors by application. Tucson's site lists self-nomination and indie author windows by cycle, and when we checked, both had closed for 2027. Apply early and read the dates. Costs are an application or table fee, travel and a stack of books. Verdict: strong for sales if you're selected.

Local and library events

Independent Bookstore Day, library author days and state awards such as the Colorado Book Awards are small, cheap and close to home. Check the organizer's rules before you enter. Costs are gas, a few boxes of books, maybe an entry fee. Verdict: the best place to start with a first book.

Dates, application windows and prices change every year, so each organizer's own site is the source for them. We've left dates and prices off this list on purpose. We checked every link below on October 23, 2026.

How to prepare for a book event: a six-step plan

Preparation decides whether a day at a table pays back.

Step 01
Set one goal

Sales, new subscribers, a meeting or something learned: pick one and measure it afterward.

Step 02
Choose the event by that goal, and check the application window before you fall for the venue.
Step 03
Get the book ready

Print copies should be in your hands weeks ahead, with a clean cover and a correct listing. Our cover design and cover template pages help if the cover isn't there yet.

Step 04
Prepare a 20 second pitch and a one page sheet with the cover, the blurb, the price and where to buy. The Title and Blurb Workshop helps with the blurb.
Step 05
Book meetings and tell your list you're going

People can't come to something they haven't heard about.

Step 06
Follow up within a week, and note what paid back

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked

What are the best book publishing events for new authors?

Local and library events plus one author conference suit a first book best. They cost less and put you in front of readers and peers, while trade fairs are aimed at publishers. Match the event to one goal, then check the organizer's site for current dates.

Are there book publishing events near me?

Start with the American Writers Museum festival directory, your state humanities council and your local independent bookstores. Our publishing directory lists other US publishers. In Colorado or the Mountain West, ask us what we know about regional events.

Do I need a publisher to attend a book fair?

No. Readers' festivals and author conferences admit independent authors, though trade fairs are mainly for industry staff. Some festivals choose presenting authors by application, so read the organizer's rules and the window dates early.

How much do book events cost an author?

Costs fall into three groups: a registration, table or application fee, travel and lodging, and the books you bring. Amounts differ by event and year, so check the organizer's page, add up all three and set a number you'd be content to lose before you apply.

How do I get a book signing event?

Approach independent bookstores and libraries with a one page sheet showing the cover, the price and how copies reach the shop. Ask weeks ahead, then tell your own list. A store is far more willing to host a signing when you bring people.

Which book publishing events cover romance or other genres?

Genre conventions exist for romance and most other fields. Dates and organizers change often, so search the genre with the year and confirm everything on the organizer's own site before booking travel.

Is it worth attending the Frankfurt or London Book Fair as an author?

Usually only if you have rights to sell or a publisher exhibiting your book. Otherwise a conference or festival gives you more for the money.

Does Western Reflections host events?

Confirmed events are posted at the top of this page when we have them. The one on our record is the 12 July 2012 signing of "The Giving Back Gang" at Maria's. To ask about a signing for your own book, write to us.
