How the book chapter length calculator works
How chapters are found
A line that passes the heading test starts a new chapter, and every line after it belongs to that chapter until the next heading. The Chapter style accepts a short line that isn't a sentence and begins with Chapter, Prologue or Epilogue, and it skips "Part One" dividers.
How words are counted
Runs of letters, digits, apostrophes and hyphens each count as one word, as in the word count tool. Headings aren't counted, and 3.5 counts as two words, so totals can differ a little from your word processor.
Evenness
The tool divides the standard deviation of chapter lengths by their average, the coefficient of variation. Under 0.20 is Very even, under 0.35 Even enough, under 0.55 Varied, higher Very uneven.
The flags
A chapter is flagged above 1.6 times the average or below half of it. With nine or more chapters, the chapters between the first third and the last third are averaged too, and flagged above 1.15 times the book average.

Chapters 7 to 12 average 4,450 words, 28 percent above the book average, so the middle flag fires while Evenness still reads "Even enough".

Chapter 5 at 9,800 words is above the 4,447 line, and chapter 8 at 900 is below the 1,390 line.

A 24 chapter book with three "# Part" lines in the markdown style gives 27 rows, three of them 0 words. The Chapter style skips them.
Back matter
Acknowledgments and a bio (850 words) pasted after a 2,500 word last chapter make it read 3,350. It isn't flagged, so the figure quietly misleads.
What the numbers mean and how to use them
Your own average matters more than a genre table, so judge each chapter against it. The tool charts words only, so convert for minutes or pages.
A 2,500 word chapter takes about 10.5 minutes to read silently at 238 words a minute, or about 16 aloud at 155. At the page count tool's 6 x 9 default of 323 words a page, it's about 7.7 printed pages.
For an audiobook, ACX audio submission requirements say each file holds one chapter or section, up to 120 minutes, as of 2026. At 155 words a minute that's 18,600 words, so a 9,800 word chapter narrates in about 63 minutes.

What is a good length for a chapter in a novel?
There's no rule. Many novels run roughly 2,000 to 5,000 words a chapter, a common working figure rather than a standard. Keep most chapters near your own average.
How long should the first chapter of your book be?
About as long as your other chapters, or a little shorter. If the tool flags chapter 1 as more than 1.6 times your average, look for where it could break.
Is 7 pages too short for a chapter?
Not by itself. At 323 words a page, the page count tool's 6 x 9 default, 7 printed pages is about 2,261 words. As manuscript pages at 250 a page, it's 1,750.
How can I estimate the length of a book?
Multiply your average chapter by your number of chapters (24 x 2,500 is 60,000 words), then use the page count estimator.
How do I convert word count to book pages?
Divide words by words a page, which depends on trim size and type. The page count estimator works it out.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words aloud?
About 6.5 minutes at 155 words a minute, the figure the word count tool uses. A slower 130 words a minute gives 7.7.
Why does the calculator show more chapters than I have, or none?
A line you didn't mean as a heading, such as a "Part One" divider in the markdown style, adds rows. If it finds none, the heading style doesn't match, so try another.
Is my manuscript uploaded or saved?
No. The tool runs in your browser and makes no network requests, so the text stays on your device. Nothing is saved when you close the page, so copy the table first.
