Book page count calculator
This book page count calculator turns a word count into a printed page count for your trim size, margins, type size and leading, then adds chapter openings, front matter and back matter. Here's the short answer with real numbers: an 80,000-word book with 32 chapters, set at 6 x 9 inches in 11 point type on 14 point leading, comes to about 304 printed pages with the default settings below.
It's an estimate, not a typesetting. Use it to get a first print quote and to feed the spine and cover math, not as the figure to print on a cover. If all you want is a quick words-to-pages answer for a manuscript or a school paper, the word count to pages calculator is the faster tool.
How to use the book page count calculator
Paste a clean figure from your word processor, or get one from the word count to pages calculator. Use a clean final draft.
A prologue and an epilogue count. A book with no chapter breaks can stay at 0.
If you don't know yet, 6 x 9 is the most common US paperback size, and 5.5 x 8.5 is a frequent choice for novels.
Leave them at 11 on 14 if you don't have a designer yet.
The defaults are 8 and 4 pages. Raise them if you know you have a long acknowledgments section or an index.
Change one setting at a time to see what each choice costs you in pages.
How the book page count calculator works
The calculator starts with the block of the page the type sits in: trim width minus the inside and outside margins, and trim height minus the top and bottom margins. Standard trade margins in the tool are 0.75 inch inside, 0.625 outside, 0.75 at the top and 0.80 at the bottom. Tight is 0.60, 0.50, 0.60 and 0.65. Generous is 0.90, 0.75, 0.90 and 0.95. At 6 x 9 with standard margins that leaves a block 4.62 inches wide and 7.45 inches tall.
Characters a line is the block width times 72 points, divided by half the type size, rounded down. The tool assumes a book serif averages about half its point size a character. Lines a page is the block height times 72, divided by the leading, rounded down. At 11 on 14 that's 60 characters and 38 lines.
Words a page is characters times lines, divided by 6 (five letters and a space), then multiplied by 0.85, because justified lines run short and the last line of every paragraph is half empty. The result at the defaults is 323 words a page. If you'd like to see leading explained properly, this note on leading in typography covers it.
Each chapter is charged 0.35 of a page for the drop at its start and 0.5 for the partly filled last page. If you tick right-hand openings, it's charged another 0.5 for the blank left-hand page that follows about half the time. That makes 0.85 pages a chapter, or 1.35 with right-hand openings. The defaults give 32 x 1.35 = 43.2, which the tool shows as 44 pages.
Total pages is body pages plus chapter openings (rounded up) plus the front and back matter you entered. If the result is odd, one page is added, because a printed sheet has two sides. At the defaults that's 248 body pages and 44 for openings, which makes 292, plus 8 and 4, for 304.
It compares your inside margin with what print on demand houses want as a book thickens, and flags a ceiling of 828 pages and a floor of 24. Amazon KDP's margin and trim size table is the one the gutter check follows: 0.375 inch up to 150 pages, 0.5 up to 300, 0.625 up to 500, 0.75 up to 700 and 0.875 beyond. The panel also adds an offset-only reminder about signatures, and points you to the spine width calculator, which takes this page count.
Worked examples
Every figure below is run through the tool's own formulas with standard margins, 11 on 14, 8 front and 4 back pages and right-hand openings, unless the line says otherwise.
Example A, the default novel. 80,000 words, 32 chapters, 6 x 9. That's 323 words a page, 248 body pages, 44 pages for chapter openings and 304 in total.
Example B, the same words at different trim sizes.
| Trim size | Words a page | Total pages |
|---|---|---|
| 5 x 8 | 220 | 420 |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | 268 | 354 |
| 6 x 9 | 323 | 304 |
| 8.5 x 11 | 632 | 182 |
Trim size changes the page count, not the word count. A small trim also costs more paper and gives you a thicker spine.
Example C, the same 6 x 9 book with different type. Generous margins at 12 on 16 give 236 words a page and 396 pages. Tight margins at 10.5 on 13 give 399 words a page and 256 pages. That's 140 pages of difference from layout alone, which is why a designer's choices, not your word count, settle the final number. Very tight settings tire the reader's eye.
Example D, chapter openings. Switch off right-hand openings on the default book and it drops to 288 pages, because openings cost 28 pages instead of 44. Set chapters to 0, one continuous text, and the total is 260, of which 12 are front and back matter.
Example E, a memoir. 52,000 words, 20 chapters, 5.5 x 8.5, with front matter raised to 10 pages: 268 words a page, 195 body pages, 27 for openings and 236 in total.
Example F, why this tool and the word count tool differ. The word count tool, at its default of 300 words a page, turns 80,000 words into 267 printed pages (80,000 / 300 = 266.7). That's body text at a fixed words-a-page figure. This estimator works out its own words a page from the type (323 at 6 x 9 here), then adds chapter openings and 12 pages of front and back matter. They answer different questions.
Example G, a thick book. 130,000 words, 40 chapters, 6 x 9, tight margins: 434 pages. The notes panel flags it, because tight margins give a 0.60 inch inside margin and a book of 301 to 500 pages needs 0.625.
What the number means and how to use it
A print quote needs a page count and a trim size, and the printer will confirm both after typesetting. Take the Total pages straight into the spine width calculator, because spine width and cover size depend on page count and paper, and then into the cover template generator.
Page count also drives cost. Print on demand charges a fixed amount plus a rate a page, so each extra page lowers what you keep on every copy. The budget and break-even calculator shows what that does to your payback.
Interior layout is priced by the page. At our published rate of $2.20 a page (minimum $600), the 304-page default is 304 x 2.20 = $668.80. That's arithmetic, not a quote, and the rates sit on the pricing page.

Common mistakes with book page counts
Using 250 or 300 words a page for a quote
That rule covers body text only. A real book adds chapter openings, front matter and back matter.
Trusting word count over layout
Trim size and type size move the page count more than the words do.
Entering manuscript pages
Double-spaced manuscript pages aren't printed pages. Convert words first.
Leaving chapters at 0
A 30-chapter book entered with 0 chapters is about 40 pages short at 1.35 pages each.
Squeezing leading
The tool won't let leading drop below type size, and a designer wouldn't either.
Treating the total as final
Hyphenation, widows and orphans, illustrations, tables and poetry all change it.
Ignoring the inside margin flag
A rejected upload costs time.
Counting a messy draft
Notes, comments and deleted passages inflate the figure. Use a clean copy.
Tips by situation
Self-publishing with print on demand
Choose the trim size first, then run the tool. Read the notes panel for gutter and page limits, and carry the page count into the spine width and budget tools. Order a proof copy, since trim only shows on a real book. Our guide to how to self-publish on Amazon walks through where the trim size is chosen.
Pitching a traditional publisher
Submissions use word count, not printed pages. Don't send a printed page count unless the agent or editor asks for one. The word count to pages calculator gives the figure they usually want.
Fiction versus nonfiction
Novels run in plain text and fit the estimate closely. Nonfiction with tables, sidebars, images, footnotes or poetry will run longer than the tool says, so raise the front and back matter and expect a designer's number to come out higher.
Children's and illustrated books
The tool estimates running text. Picture books and photo books are laid out page by page, so use it for chapter books and not for those.

When a page count becomes a layout
Once you know the page count, the next question is who sets the type. Our interior layout is $2.20 a page with a $600 minimum, and it includes typeset pages, front and back matter, a print PDF and a proofing copy. Print setup is $280 plus the printer's cost: the files are prepared, the spine is measured to the paper and one proof is ordered and checked. We read a sample before quoting, and we've published since 1996.

Questions we get asked
How do I estimate the page count of a book?
Take the word count, work out the words a page for your trim size and type, divide, then add chapter openings, front matter and back matter. The calculator above does all four steps. Real typesetting will move the result a little.
How many words make a 400 page book?
With this estimator's defaults (11 on 14, standard margins, 32 chapters), about 111,000 words at 6 x 9 and about 92,000 at 5.5 x 8.5 reach 400 pages. A designer who sets larger type or wider margins will need fewer words to fill the same pages.
How long is a 200 page book?
Using 20 chapters, about 52,000 words at 6 x 9 and about 43,000 at 5.5 x 8.5. At the 238 words a minute that our word count tool uses for silent reading, that's roughly 3 hours 38 minutes and 3 hours 1 minute.
How many pages would 1,000 words be in a novel?
About three printed pages at 6 x 9 with the default type (1,000 / 323 is 3.1), and about four double-spaced manuscript pages at 250 words each. For the manuscript figure, use the word count tool.
What is the 50 page rule?
It's a reading habit, not a publishing rule. In her 2003 book Book Lust, the librarian Nancy Pearl suggested giving a book 50 pages before putting it down, with readers over 50 subtracting their age from 100. For authors, it means the opening pages are your audience's trial.
Why does this give a different number from the word count tool?
The word count tool uses a fixed words-a-page figure for body text only. This one works out words a page from the type, then adds chapter openings and front and back matter. Use this one for printing and the other for submissions.
Is there a page count calculator in Excel?
You can rebuild the same math in a spreadsheet: find the type area, work out words a page, then add the extras. A browser tool is quicker because it redoes the sums as you change the type.
Does the page count change for an ebook?
Ebooks reflow to the reader's screen, so there's no fixed page count. Retailers show an estimate, and this tool is for print. Don't quote an ebook page count as if it were a printed one.
