1 book in the catalogue.

Susan Dalton is a Telluride resident whose book Telluride: A Silver Past, A Golden Future tells the town's history through photographs, prints, maps and vintage postcards. Western Reflections listed the book in its old online store under her name, and it now has a page in our library.

About Susan Dalton

The Telluride Historical Museum announced a signing for Dalton's book on September 4, 2014. A newspaper article dated December 1, 2014 says the project grew out of her interest in history, antiques and vintage postcards. Neither page gives her birth year, career or other books, so we offer no more biography.

The coffee table book is a collection of snippets of text, maps, historical photos and prints, many from Dalton's own collection and some supplied by local history enthusiast Dirk dePagter, with help from the museum.

Themes

What the books share

The book runs from the days when only the Uncompahgre Utes lived in the valley to the Olympic silver medal won by skier Gus Kenworthy. It is built as a scrapbook rather than a narrative, mixing short text with images. The newspaper adds that the story is told largely through the graphics. We have not seen the book itself, so we describe it only as the two pages do.

Walking Main Street with a map

Open the structures survey on your phone, then walk the blocks. Matching an old postcard view to the building that stands there today is a good use of a visit.

Dating an old postcard of your own

If you collect postcards, as Dalton does, the photo archive can help you compare street scenes and spot what changed. For a stubborn case, the museum takes research requests by email.

Learning the town before a first trip

The encyclopedia article gives you the basics, and the museum's own site tells you what its ten rooms cover. Check its season dates before you plan around a visit.

Questions readers ask

Good to know

Did Western Reflections publish this book?
Yes, going by the publisher's own records: its old online store listed the book under Dalton's name. The museum page and newspaper article we read do not name a publisher.
Is it the same as A Brief History of Telluride?
No. That book in our library is credited to Christian J. Buys and was published in 2003.
