Books
In the Colorado Gold Fever Mountains
Three books of free verse in one, spoken by the people of Colorado's early mining camps. It won the 2000 Colorado Book Award for Poetry and was published by Western Reflections in 1999.
Widow's Burden
A 2001 narrative poem, described as a tale ripped from the headlines yet timeless. Cooperman's publisher biography says it was runner-up for the WILLA Award in 2001.
What the books share
In the Colorado Gold Fever Mountains, the people of the early mining camps speak for themselves in free verse, in a book made of three smaller ones. Widow's Burden carries the same narrative habit into a single story told as a poem, which its description compares to Homer and Milton. Both books sit in the frontier West, and both lean on storytelling more than lyric abstraction. The Colorado Encyclopedia names the first as a leading example of Colorado's historic-narrative poetry.
