About this book
Tiny Hinsdale of the Silvery San Juans is Carolyn and Clarence Wright's history of Hinsdale County, the high, thinly settled corner of Colorado that Lake City sits in. Western Reflections reprinted it so the county's early history stays in print, and the catalogue lists this edition at 198 pages.
The original is older than our edition. A bibliography note on the Town of Lake City's mining page cites Clarence and Carolyn Wright, Tiny Hinsdale of The Silvery San Juan, published in Lake City by Big Mountain Press in 1964. The town uses the book as a source for its account of the county's mining districts, which is a fair measure of how local historians have relied on it.
Hinsdale County is small by any count. It was formed in February 1874, with San Juan City as its first county seat, and the seat moved to Lake City on February 23, 1875. The census counted 788 residents in 2020, and the county's population peaked at 1,609 in 1900.
Who it is for
This is a county history, nonfiction, about Hinsdale County and Lake City in the San Juan Mountains. The Town of Lake City cites it as a source for the mining districts of the county's north, so it is a local account of the places around Lake City.
Ways to use this book
Tracing a family that lived in the county

Hunting for an older printing
The record shows this as a reprint, so an earlier edition exists. Ask a library to run an interlibrary loan request for any other Hinsdale County histories, and compare how each handles the mining districts.
