John Duer Irving and Howland Bancroft
1 book in the catalogue.
John Duer Irving and Howland Bancroft were geologists who wrote the 1911 U.S. Geological Survey report on the Lake City district. We publish one book under their names, a reprint of that report. The two had different careers, and each has a short biography below.
About John Duer Irving and Howland Bancroft
According to Wikipedia, John Duer Irving was born on August 18, 1874, in Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated from Columbia University, joined the U.S. Geological Survey in 1899, and became chair of economic geology at Yale's Sheffield Scientific School in 1907. He worked with Samuel Franklin Emmons on Leadville and the Black Hills. He died in France in July 1918, during World War I.
A biographical note published by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers says Howland Bancroft was born in Denver and worked for the Survey from 1907 to 1912. He then opened a consulting mining geology office in Denver, and later managed oil operations in Panama and Venezuela.
What the books share
The shared work is the report itself, USGS Bulletin 478, published in 1911 as Geology and Ore Deposits near Lake City, Colorado. The USGS page for the bulletin names both men as authors. Wikipedia lists the report among Irving's Survey publications, alongside his Leadville study with Emmons. The report belongs to the Survey's tradition of describing mining districts so that working geologists could read the ground.
