Claude Steelman
2 books in the catalogue, published 2005 to 2006.
Claude Steelman is a Durango photographer who runs the Wildshots gallery. His two books on our list are Colorado For the First Time (2005) and Durango Country (2006). Both are coffee table books of Colorado landscape and natural history pictures.
About Claude Steelman
The Durango Herald profile describes Wildshots as a gallery on Main Avenue in Durango whose walls hold only Steelman's own photographs of wildlife and landscapes, plus bronzes by a Mancos sculptor. He prints on paper, canvas and metal, and ships locally, nationally and internationally. The Herald says he moved to Durango in 1988 from northern Colorado and has had four galleries there.
Books
Colorado For the First Time
A 2005 photo book that mixes familiar views with places such as Picketwire Canyon and Irish Canyon, and describes the weather and terrain Steelman faced to get his shots.
Durango Country
A 2006 photo book about Durango as a sporting and cultural center, covering the town's cycling, rafting, skiing, fishing and festivals.
What the books share
Both books are about Colorado places seen through a lens. Colorado For the First Time ranges across the state, including lesser-known spots like Rattlesnake Canyon and Coffee Pot Spring. Durango Country narrows to one town, its sports and its festivals. Neither is a text history. They are picture books, and the photographer's range runs from wild canyons to town life.
