Sherie Fox Schmauder grew up in the Northwest near the Oregon Trail. The time she spent living in areas where Western history took place affected her greatly. She became interested in the effect of landscape on women, particularly on those who persevere in the face of difficult and hazardous surroundings in the settlement of the West.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Idaho, with an M.A. from New York University, Schmauder received a New Jersey State Council of the Arts Grant for prose in 1994. She has contributed biographies to Past and Present: Lives of New Jersey Women, and her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in various magazines.

Schmauder is a certified pilot and loves to snowshoe and hike in the beautiful mountains surrounding her winter home in Lake Tahoe. She spends her summers in a remote region of Vermont.
